Constructing a new way of learning for village pupils
October
9, 2009
MAJOR building work
at their school is giving a new twist to lessons for pupils at
Marton-cum Grafton, near Boroughbridge.
For youngsters at
the village primary school are enjoying learning about building
and architecture as work proceeds on a £500,000 project to
provide two new classrooms, an extension to the hall and kitchen
and an improved library and music room.
Work started over the summer on the extension scheme and the
project should be completed by January.
This week architect Catherine Hewitt, from Wildblood MacDonald,
and structural engineer Andy Wade talked to the children about
how a project goes through each stage from the architect's
drawings into a building. The youngsters also had a chance to go
on site with builders Houseman and Falshaw.
'fantastic'
Headteacher Marie-Louise Thirlaway said: "It is fantastic for
the children to be able to see the changes taking place just
outside their classrooms on a daily basis.
"The extension will dramatically improve life for all our
pupils."
As the school is Voluntary Aided, the parents, school and
governors have to raise 10 per cent of the £500,000 building
costs, which, for a school of just 60 families, is a tall order.
fundraising
Over the last year they have been busy fundraising and the
school is running a Dedicated Giving Scheme where individuals or
business can buy anything from a brick to an outside classroom.
They are nearing their target but still have £6,000 to go and
the school also has a list of equipment it would like to provide
in the new classrooms on top of the project costs.
Anyone interested in donating towards the school appeal can
